Our Story

Early in the year 1990, a committee was set up by the Old Irepodun Baptist Association of the defunct Lagos State Baptist Conference. The committee was chaired by the Late Pastor of First Baptist Church, Festac Town, Rev. G. Awo-Fadeyi.

The committee was given the mandate to consider the need for the multiplication of the Irepodun Baptist Association. Bellow is the content of the letter written by the chairman after he had met with his members:“With reference to the on-going deliberation regarding the splitting of Lagos State Baptist Conference associations of which Irepodun Baptist Association was one. The council of the above named Association has agreed that the Association be divided into two bodies as earlier considered, it was also advised that the two proposed bodies be named Irepodun 1 and Irepodun 2 respectively”.

An eye witness, who was a member of the committee, Dn. M.A. Phillip of the First Baptist Church, Oshodi reported that a resolution was passed, after much deliberation and consultation, on June 9, 1990. Owning to this resolution on the above date, the present Irepodun Baptist Association was given birth to . However, it was formally known as Irepodun 1 while the other one was called Irepodun 2 (later called Unity Baptist Association of Lagos Central Baptist Conference).

 The churches that constituted the Irepodun 1 Baptist Association were:

3. Ebenezer Baptist Church, Mafoluku
4. Ijeshatedo Baptist Church (Now FBC, Ijeshatedo)
5. Ajao-Estate Baptist Church (Now New Glory B.C. Ajao Estate)
6. Ewutuntun Baptist Church, (Now Higher Grand B.C. Ewutuntun)
7. Orile Oshodi Baptist Church (Now Emmanuel B.C. Orile Oshodi)
8. Enilo-lobo Baptist Church, Enilo-lobo.
9. First Baptist Church, Mafoluku
10. First Baptist Church, Shogunle
11. First Baptist Church, Oshodi
12. First Baptist Church, Ago-Shasha
13. Nazareth Baptist Church, Ogunlowo

Rev. J.Adetutu of FBC Shogunle was the first Moderator , Late Bro. J.O. Ogunwunmi took off as the pioneer Secretary while Rev. J.O. Akinola served as the first consultant.

The name Irepodun Baptist Association was retained until 2007. It became imperative to change the name from Irepodun I to “Irepodun” as it was formally called before her multiplication in 1990.

There was need for this development because the name “Irepodun Baptist Association” wit which the association was formally known became sine-qua-non for the Association to secure certificate of occupancy for her property at Abule-Teacher. The Association was left with no other than to drop the appellation 1″.

Until Rev. S.T.A. Olabode assumed the office as the Moderator on January 1st, 2001, the churches under Irepodun I Baptist Association stood at 22. According to the speech given in his valedictory address at the 4th Quarter Association meeting on Saturday 13th January, 2007, at Ebenezer B.C. Mafoluku, the man of God said in part “The Association was not too big in number of churches but too broad to manage for effective performance as it spread outside Lagos State. A good number of member churches found it difficult to attend some of our meetings especially the Friday’s programes. My first bold step was to find a means of trimming down the association to a manageable size”.

Put differently, it was during the tenure of Rev. S.T.A. Olabode that churches like FBC, Suberu Oje; Ago Sasa; Enilolobo; Nazareth Ogunlowo; Abule Teacher; Emmanuel Idimu; e.t.c. were seeded to other Associations closer to them.

It was placed on record that for the two term of 3years each that was spent by the pioneer Moderator and the Consultant Rev. J. Adetutu and Late Rev. J.O. Akinola respectively, the following people also had the privilege of serving in one capacity or the other. They included:
