About Church

The church that is now called “First Baptist Church, Sogunle” began as Gospel Baptist Church, Sogunle.  Among the churches founded then was Gospel Baptist Church, Oshodi which also planted Gospel Baptist Church Shogunle in February 1962. Due to pressing need to have a preaching station, the mother church- Gospel Baptist Church Oshodi-towards the end of 1961 prayed for 5 members and saddled them with the responsibility of founding a preaching station.

The names of the people are:

Mr. S.O. Shiyanbola – Leader, Madam Alice Tinuola, Madam Mariam Amori, Madam Susanah Adefunke and Madam Janet Sogunle. It was written in the 30th anniversary programme that “between December 1961 and February 1962, 6 members first joined the church.

On 6th August, 1973, Gospel Baptist Church Sogunle joined the Baptist Association II

The church became officially known as First Baptist Church Sogunle on 6th October 1973. (i.e was organized),On the same day, she became an autonomous member of The Nigerian Baptist Convention,Landed property was acquired for the church from Alh. Akesode. It was 100sq ft land and was leased for 180 pound.The land was situated at Abule Lawyer street but now called Adeyanju street..

In November 1968 the mother church assisted in erecting a wooden structure on the land. The 1st service was held in the structure on 10th November, 1968.The wooden structure was replaced with permanent structure between 1972 and 1977, six months later, the church decided to build a pastorium. Yaba Baptist church agreed to give (N3,000.00) with the agreement that half of the money is a gift while the other half will be retuned as soon as possible.

  • The first harvest thanksgiving service was held in December 1968
  • The first service of songs was held on 3rd October, 1971.
  • Nazareth Kindergarten Nursery School was organized in October 2nd, 1985.

The pastorium was rebuilt from a bungalow to a story building between May 1986 and August 1988 unser the leadership of Deacon S.A. Laoye.

First set of Deacons were ordained on 24th March 1984, second set of Deacons were ordained in November, 1996 while the third set of Deacons were ordained on 17th  November, 2012.

The Church has 13 societies.

First preaching Station was planted on 7th September, 1986 at Ogunlowo in Iju-Ajuwon, Ogun State. It was named Nazareth Baptist Church.

The second preaching station was planted in 1993 at Ijoko-Lemode in Ogun State, It was named New Generation Baptist Church and the third preaching station was planted in 2005, it was named First Baptist Church Orudu.
